Topic > Censorship for JD Salinger - 736

Censorship is an ongoing topic that is debated when it comes to what books students should and should not read in school. The book “Catcher In The Rye” by JD Salinger is one of the most controversial books because of the content said in the book. Sex, alcohol, drugs and profane language are what is mentioned in the book. In my opinion, censorship should be in place so that books like "Catcher In The Rye" are banned from schools so that students are not able to read such books with that material. By having students read books in school that contain topics such as sex, alcohol, drugs, and foul language, it will have some effect on the student. Having a student read material with these topics will make them think that it is okay to go out and have sex, drink alcohol, do drugs, or speak in profane language. Students will get the idea that this is what they should do and that this is what others do. If young students are not yet mature enough, they may not have the maturity level to handle this type of information. Censorship must be enforced so that students in today's society are not influenced by what they read in school. There are some students and/or parents who would be very offended by certain things that are said or discussed in books. In "Catcher In The Rye" profane language, such as "curse", is used a huge amount of times. Some people with certain religions or beliefs would disagree and stop reading the book. As Holden says: First of all, I'm kind of an atheist. I like Jesus and all that, but I don't care much for most other things in the Bible. Let's take the Disciples for example. They are damn annoying... in the middle of the paper... literature that contains topics of sex, alcohol, drugs and profane language. These topics are what helped those books become classics. In high school, teachers want their students to read the classics so that they can better understand the writing style used then. Censorship will always be a topic that can be discussed especially when it comes to the books that are read in school. There are some topics that should not be discussed or talked about in great detail in books read in school. Even though the book is a literary classic, like “Catcher In The Rye,” it must be censored. It is important to have censorship so that students do not get the wrong impression of sex, alcohol, drugs and profane language. Works Cited Salinger, J.D. The Catcher in the Rye.
