Edgar Allan Poe along with Mark Twain are two of the most influential authors our world has ever seen. Their descriptive ability and diction have had a huge impact on their readers for centuries. Poe's gothic writing style was very gripping and suspenseful; it left you wanting to know what would happen next. Whereas Mark Twain was a very entertaining author who intended everything he read to be entertaining. The descriptive capacity incorporated by these world-famous authors is extraordinary. Edgar Allan Poe wrote primarily stories dealing with Gothic literature; the stories were often quite sad. Poe had a very sad worldview and expressed it in all his literary works. His goal was to leave an impression with every detail he included in his stories. Although Poe's stories seem very miserable and lackluster, they all convey a certain idea. A trademark of Poe is the use of very long and complex sentences. For example, in his work The Fall of the House of Usher, Poe tried to ensure that every detail was as relevant as possible by integrating a wide variety of emotions. In the third paragraph, on page two hundred and ninety-seven, Poe wrote, "Faint gleams of crimson light found their way through the trellis panes, and served to render sufficiently distinct the more prominent objects around..." This sentence illustrates the descriptiveness and complexity in which consisted of the works of Edgar Allan Poe. Poe's tormented knowledge led him to use very dark diction in all of his writing. Edgar Allan Poe's gothic writing style and Mark Twain's humorous and realist writing tone played a large role in the reasons why literature is the way it is today. The impact these two individuals have had on our society has shaped our world to be a better and more fascinating place. They introduced us to new writing concepts along with complex ways to communicate their ideas to audiences. Edgar Allan Poe's Gothic writing style established a completely new vision of how literature was viewed and received the attention of readers around the world. Mark Twain had a very lighthearted approach when writing his humorous masterpieces. These authors left a huge impression on the literary world which is still prevalent in literature today.
