There are many cultural differences in body modification in the Eastern world because Eastern worldviews and ways of expressing themselves are different from those of the Western world. A person's opinions on certain issues are often influenced by their upbringing or their religious influences or lack thereof. If someone was raised more conservative and strict, their views on body modification would certainly be different than those of someone who grew up in a more open-minded household. Self-expression is something very open and personal. Since self-expression is something that involves many feelings and emotions, a person can become very attached or dependent on the way they express themselves. The way people choose to express themselves can vary. Some people express themselves through painting, some by writing music and some by dancing. Another way people choose to express themselves is through something called body modification. Body modification by definition “is the deliberate alteration of human anatomy or phenotype. It is often done for aesthetics, sexual enhancement, rites of passage, religious beliefs, to show belonging or affiliation to a group, to create body art, for shock value, and as self-expression, among other reasons. (Web Definitions, 2014) There are many different ways you can change your body. An example of a simpler and more common body modification would be ear piercing. Ear piercing is so common nowadays that some even think it is a tradition to have their daughter's ears pierced at a young age. It has become a common staple of femininity and beauty around the world. An example of a more drastic and unusual body modification... in the center of the card... if the world is deeply rooted in tradition and spiritual views. They see these body modifications as a rite of passage in many cases and not so much for aesthetic purposes, even though many of these body modifications are seen as beautiful by many people and many cultures. Western society has adapted some body modifications from the Eastern world, but has most of the time used them for aesthetic purposes. We are a society and a culture that revolve around the way things appear and the way we see ourselves. When a person modifies their body in Western society, it is often for the pure purpose of changing their appearance or the appearance of something about themselves. In conclusion, this is why there are many cultural differences in body modification in the Eastern and Western world. because the visions and ways of expression of the Eastern world are different from those of the Western world.
