Topic > The Iroquois League and the Longhouses - 1027

The Iroquois League, also known as the Iroquois League, was originally composed of five nations including the Mohawk, Seneca, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Oneida (Richter 1983). Overall they originated in the Hamilton-Niagara region of southwestern Ontario and adjacent New York (Noble 1984), however, they did not begin as a League. This article will explore the boundaries of Iroquois territoriality, including the range they covered and their area of origin, as well as how the territory is used to make a living and also how it is defended. As stated before, the Iroquois League inhabited the Hamilton-Niagara region of southwestern Ontario and adjacent New York (Noble 1984). These areas are known to have many lakes, rivers, dense and abundant forests, abundant rainfall, and soil rich enough for harvesting. These were known as the Eastern Woodlands and are direct neighbors to the Subarctic north and the Plains culture to the left. The Iroquois League used the numerous natural landmarks around them to establish territory between the tribes. Horticulture, the art or practice of growing and managing gardens, was their main source of livelihood, so much so that they used words meaning "our life" or "sustains us" when naming their food as corn (Parker 1988 ). Politically, the Iroquois League established a constitution known as the Great Binding Law. Passed down orally for many generations, only recently have the Iroquois attempted to transfer their constitution into written form (Parker 1988). For many generations they also used wampum belts and cords to recall laws and regulations, but they continued to be destroyed or lost and in fear of the total destruction of their ancient archives, the Iroquois League chose......middle of paper.. .. ..when the colonies won the revolution, the Iroquois were forced to move territory and settle in areas called reservations, assigned by the colonies. More recently, the Iroquois are still present but scattered and not as important as they once were. As of 1990 there are only 50,000 in the United States. Their religion changed from predominantly spiritual to Christian faith, thanks to the influence of the Quakers. In conclusion, the Iroquois League is a historic horticultural group that has left its mark well into history. They were a group of matriarchal natives whose tribes were all about peace and tranquility, however, we must not forget their killer instinct when it came to holding captives in war; this was a unique quality of the tribes. The fall of the Iroquois League was unfortunate, but fortunately they are still alive and well today.
