The world has developed, changed and globalized. Of course, Korean culture has also developed, changed and globalized naturally by accepting new foreign culture. A new culture is also forming in Korea. However, part of the Korean culture is retained. People who have an ethnic identity try to maintain their conventional culture. So, what is the culture and ethnic identity that Koreans try to maintain? It is courtesy, directness of harmony and social relations. Firstly, Korea is well known for "the country of polite people in the East". Long ago, China initially called Korea that way, because Koreans have Confucian ideas. So, Koreans consider courtesy very important and their daily life is imbued with courtesy. Koreans not only have respect and courtesy for elders, but also speak with respect towards others. Furthermore, Koreans make concessions among themselves. For example, we can easily see that young people give up their seats to the elderly in the bus and young people do not take the elderly seats in the subway even if there are no elderly people. We also find courtesy at meal times. Young people should not eat before older people lift the spoon. It's a kind of respect for elders. Secondly, Korean has a directivity of harmony. In Korea, family has the highest priority, so a loving family is considered very important. My father, for example, was a soldier and we moved house constantly due to the characteristics of his job. So he retired from work because he thought that constantly moving house wasn't good for the family and our education. My father always considers family a top priority. Koreans also try to blend well with other groups and have excellent community spirit. There are some examples. People involved in any club feel like they belong to it and this makes people have more trust. Then they try to join groups. Another example is that Koreans who move to a new house give rice cakes to the neighborhood because they have community spirit. For these reasons, Koreans rely on each other sincerely. Finally, Koreans believe that social relationships are very important. In Korea the hierarchical system is very rigid. In particular, men who have served in the military consider this system more important because the army is a representative hierarchical system. Because of this social inclination, people want to get a high-ranking position in society and want to have good jobs as prosecutors, judges, doctors and lawyers.
