The benefits of inclusion in a classroom for students with autism spectrum disordersToday, with the help of educators, policymakers, advocates, families and communities, researchers educators have been able to establish various teaching and behavioral techniques. these different methods have been implemented to improve the lives of children with disabilities, particularly within the education system. Over time, the public education system has transformed as interventions and practices have taken institutions to new heights. For an intervention to be successful, it must meet the needs of each individual child and provide the appropriate support and services to do so. In the United States of America, one in eighty-eight children are diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder, and the number is only increasing. Clark and colleagues (2010) define an autism spectrum disorder as “a class of lifelong neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by impairments in reciprocal social interactions, verbal and nonverbal communication skills, and restricted, repetitive, and repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, and activities. stereotyped." (641). With the increase in diagnoses for children with an autism spectrum disorder, now more than ever there is a growing demand not only for the development of new approach procedures, but also for the need to make improvements to existing ones. Numerous interventions and techniques have been built specifically for children on the autism spectrum and are introduced throughout developmental stages. One intervention that has substantially improved the learning of children with autism spectrum disorders is an inclusive school environment. Inclusion in Special Education...... middle of paper ...... the child on the autism spectrum. Because any inclusive classroom intervention is individual-based, it is essential that teachers are able to assess the child to implement interventions that accurately match his or her interests and strengths. Personal reaction I believe that to effectively use inclusion within a classroom it is necessary to know about autism spectrum disorders, how to evaluate them and be able to know and implement interventions that are individually specific to the child's needs. Inclusion further advances society, improves attitudes and highlights new ways to promote equality and academic success. The statistics are higher than ever and continue to rise, so we must not only stand up against the research that is already underway, but continue to discover and adapt interventions in order to improve the academic success of all students.
