For many teens, getting their license when they turn 16 is a highlight. However, over the years it has become less and less clear whether or not 16-year-olds are mature enough to drive. There are many different opinions and statistics for both sides of the argument. Due to the high number of accidents among teenagers, studies show that increasing the driving age will reduce accidents among teenagers. Statistics are a major contributor to the argument that the driving age should be raised. One in five 16-year-olds will have a notable traffic accident within their first year of driving. In 2003, 937 16-year-old drivers were involved in fatal accidents; 411 sixteen-year-old drivers and 352 passengers died in those wrecks. In 2005, an average of two people in the United States died every day in vehicles operated by 16-year-old drivers. Sixteen-year-old drivers are involved in fatal crashes at a rate nearly five times higher than those over 20. Forty percent of 16-year-old drivers involved in fatal single-vehicle crashes in 2003 had one or more passengers. This shows that teenagers who drive with a passenger cannot be trusted because it puts them and others in danger. About 77% of 16-year-olds involved in a fatal crash made a driving mistake, compared to less than 60% of drivers over the age of 20. These are some of the many statistics that show why teenagers are too young to drive (Davis) (O'Donnell). Many restrictions and laws have been established to limit teenagers. In North Carolina, teenagers are not allowed to drive after 9 pm for the first six months after getting their license and in California, teenagers are not allowed to carry passengers for the first six months after getting their (driving) license.
