Everyone should do some sort of community service at some point in their life. Community service is volunteer work intended to help people in a particular area. Teach people what is right and what is wrong. It helps you develop respect for others and understand that there are people who live harder lives than you. You shouldn't sit around doing nothing and complain that your life is bad, you should instead help others understand that there is something out there that can benefit everyone. To meet the recommended twenty-four hours of community service, I volunteered with VFW Wagner-Good Post #216 in Hamburg, Pennsylvania. What is the VFW you may ask? The VFW or Veterans of Foreign Wars is a non-profit organization. Their mission is to serve our veterans, military personnel and our communities. I personally chose to work with the VFW because of my grandfather. My grandfather; Joseph Deesing, served in World War II and the Korean War. I thought a good way to show him some respect for fighting for our country would be to give some of my time and help the VFW. I love my grandfather and that's why I would do anything to make him proud. I don't know what I would do without him in my life. I also chose to help the VFW because my parents said it would be a good thing and because they knew some of the employees, so it was easy for me to contact them. Getting to know some of the VFW employees made the experience easier for me. I was able to get started right away since they already knew me. Everyone was so nice and made things easy and fun to do. Jennifer Naftzinger has been my mentor throughout my volunteering at the VFW. He showed me how to use the different machines and made my volunteer work a... means of paper ......little could mean a lot to those who appreciate it. I also learned that doing something for others could be really fun. Volunteering with the VFW has also increased my social skills. By working at the burger fest I was able to work with other people and this increased my social skills. Volunteering doesn't have to be boring. If you volunteer with friends or family, not only could you benefit by having fun with people you know, but it could also benefit others. The VFW's vision is to ensure that veterans are respected for their service, always receive their earned rights, and are recognized for the sacrifices they and their loved ones have made on behalf of this great country. I am proud to say that I have volunteered with the VFW and will continue to volunteer even though I have completed the recommended twenty-four hours.
