Topic > Archaeology: Heinrich Schliemann - 727

Archaeology, which is the study of human activity in the past, has many significant names who have discovered sites important to the history of art. One of these names is Heinrich Schliemann. Heinrich Schliemann was born on January 6, 1822 and died on December 26, 1890. Schliemann was a businessman who spoke 15 languages and was a world traveler. His father read Homer's Iliad to him when he was eight years old, which made his biggest dream to become an expert in archeology and discover the places Homer talked about. Schliemann, as a businessman, made a fortune, which was enough for him to retire; then, in 1871, he began to follow his dream and worked in Troy. Heinrich Schliemann's work is very important and has added significant value to the history of art. His discoveries at Troy, Mycenae and Tiryns made him a pioneer of archaeology. One of Schliemann's most important works was the discovery of Troy. Schliemann began excavations at Hissarlik, which is the modern name for Troy, before archeology became a developed professional field. In May 1873 he found gold and other objects at the excavation site and called it “Priam's Treasure.” Later, Sophia Schliemann, who is his wife, wore to the public the jewels that Schliemann found in the excavations of Troy. The Turkish government then canceled the permit Schliemann had to dig and sued him to share the gold found. However, Schliemann claimed that he had smuggled the treasure he found out of Turkey for protection. The conclusion of the excavations at Troy was therefore the gold and treasure found by Schliemann. The “Mask of Agamemnon” and the shaft tombs are other important discoveries for Heinrich Schliemann. After leaving Turkey, Schliemann began to dig into M...... middle of paper...... this can be denied. His important discoveries at Troy, Mycenae and Tiryns have a significant impact on the history of art for multiple reasons as mentioned in the previous paragraphs. Furthermore, his most significant discoveries are the gold jewelry found in Troy, the "Mask of Agamemnon", and the shaft tombs discovered in Mycenae. He wanted to be an archaeologist from a young age after learning about Homer's Iliad that his father told him. On the other hand, Schliemann received much criticism over his excavation methods. I think that even though he used the wrong methods in his excavations, his discoveries were very important; so people cannot forget his discoveries and continue to criticize his methods. Therefore, I think it is now more important to search and dig, in order to find further discoveries that can help us learn more about people from the past..
