Topic > Not nominated for an Oscar: First Place - 1235

Many people have said that they have lost faith in the Oscars. Some made this claim after the documentary First Position was not nominated. This documentary fits into every possible category but doesn't make it. There are many reasons why he should have been nominated and those reasons are due to ballet's historical significance, its ongoing debates about gender, race and sexuality, and ballet's championing of talent, passion and drive. The story of the ballet travels back to the time of King Louis XIV. According to Dance At Court, King Louis XIV was known as the first star of ballet for his exceptional dancing skills and his power to take people's minds off war. While at court, King Louis' dancing distracted everyone's views on wealth, war, and land and focused their attention on the beauty and charisma of dance and poetry. Dance shaped the world politically with King Louis XIV and his dance. They also shape the world culturally and socially with their different types of court dance. They are all different, but ballet was the court dance of France and other European countries. Ballet, now, is presented to entertain people who come to shows to see phenomenal dancers perform classical ballets as they have always been performed. However, that has changed. Ballet has been transformed into different forms that people believe are not true to what ballet should have been. Dance forms such as neoclassical ballet, lyrical, romantic ballets and more. However, there are places that contribute to maintaining the true art of classical ballet in the world. Places like the Royal Ballet School in London, the Kirov Ballet School in Russia and, most importantly, the Paris Opera Ballet in France. Ballet is a historic art form that needs to be... front and center... The fact that this production was gay wasn't helped by the fact that Matthew Bourne, himself, was gay. Dance should be for everyone who is willing to move to the beat. Dance is a supporter of those who need an outlet. Dance is for everyone, regardless of who you are. Only when you decide to make a living, it becomes only for a few people willing to fight for it. If you have a passion for dance, talent, whether innate or learned, and the desire to be the best, dance is for you. First Position should have received an Oscar nomination because it was just that good. If that's not enough, you should read this article and Rainsford Alexandra's article on the Huffington Post. Dance continues to evolve with the times and addressing the great moments and flaws of this art will make it better in the future to come..
