Ions fundamental to human health Ions are fundamental to human health. As defined by Dictionary.com, an ion is an electrically charged atom or group of atoms formed by the loss or gain of one or more electrons. The human body is the most intricate of “designs,” despite being composed of basic natural resources called elements. Ions discussed in this document include oxygen, carbon, potassium, and sulfur. A healthy body is made up of these ions, along with others (zinc, fluoride, iron, etc.). The absence of these elements could lead to an unhealthy body and make it an easier target for diseases. Chemical formulas, charges and properties will also be discussed in this document. Additionally, the essential role of the ion, how the ion serves the organism, the diseases that can result from a deficiency, and the global distribution of such deficiencies are addressed. Ions are an essential part of human health. The ions present make the daily functions of the body possible, allowing it to be protected from bacteria or cruel diseases. OxygenOxygen (O) is one of the most important ions in the body and makes up 61% of body mass. It helps in the destruction of harmful bacteria, while preserving beneficial bacteria for the body. Oxygen takes over its role and transfers the bacteria absorbed in the lungs to the cells, enabling cellular respiration. Oxygen allows for the replacement of old cells, the protection of new ones, the production of energy from food, and the breakdown of other foods (“Oxygen and the Human Body,” n.d.). Oxygen is also vital for producing an activity known as metabolism, which is “the sum of the physical and chemical processes in an organism whereby its material substance is… half paper… and flesh.” . Protein foods are the main source of sulfur. Sulfur plays an important role in the protective activities of cells and cartilage. Sulfur can also be used in home remedies such as those for acne and dandruff and can aid in wound healing. Sulfur has a 2-charge.ConclusionIn conclusion, our body is composed of different ions which are essential in the body to achieve a healthy system. In order to enjoy the benefits that these ions offer the body, the body must be cared for by nourishing it with the right foods, exercising regularly and ensuring that it is healthy by attending scheduled check-ups. Ions help the body in more ways than one. They provide the body with nutrients that strengthen our health system to ensure our well-being is maintained. These ions can be beneficial to the human body by maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
