Topic > The importance of the oral interview - 729

The interviewer will begin the interview by allowing the participant to describe experiences with technology in the classroom, current pedagogical practices, or any other information the participant deems relevant, without being interrupted. Participants will be intensely encouraged to explain their perspective on technology use and disposition. Participants will be given the time necessary to fully share the depth of the experience (Katz, 1992). This will be done while the interviewer carefully documents the information deemed appropriate. There will be open questions. Follow-up on the narrative provided by the interviewer will be necessary by asking additional questions that allow the participant to describe more detail about a specific part of the narrative in order to provide clarity from the narrative. Subsequent requests will be phrases like: “Tell me about”; “What happened next?”; “Tell me what else you remember”; “And then what happened?”). There will also be specific closed-ended questions that can simply be answered with a "Yes" or a "No". These can be used to fill in any missing information in the narrative (Cassell, 2006). The last phase of the interview will be the closing. Participants will be informed of other support services available to them and specific locations where possible.
