What is community service to you? How do you think the recent recession has affected community service? As a military service veteran, I'm sure all of you have performed many types of community service. Recent problems in our nation's economy have caused changes in the amount of community services provided on a daily basis, but those changes may not necessarily be what you'd think. Although in most cases community service does not require the use of money, some Americans worry about their families more than others. The purpose of this article is to explain through research how quickly community service can change with economic problems. Studies have recently been conducted on community services and the change the recession has had on them. An article written by Caroline Preston in August this year states: “The report released last month by the Corporation for National and Community Service found that 26.4% of Americans, or 61.8 million people, last year they volunteered through a nonprofit group. This figure was approximately one million more than in 2007 (6).” During the period of this study, Americans performed more community service than the previous year. Even though the recession was causing some Americans to lose their jobs, many of them still found time to give back to their community in any way they could. There are many different types of community service that anyone can do when they have the time. From working in soup kitchens to helping paint houses for Habitat for Humanity. Community service is basically people taking the time to help those who are down on their luck and need help. With the recent recession, people have chosen to continue community service to help those who...... middle of paper...... serve more now than ever. The government is asking us as a country to help more in this time of need. The only question I have for you is: what can you do to help and what are you willing to do to give back to your community? Only time will tell if this country is going in the right direction, but I think that with the drive that the people of this country have shown to move forward and the amount that people give, this country will get through this bad time and start to prosper once again.
