An excerpt from Hebrews 12:14 in the Bible states, “Seek peace with all, and holiness without which no one will see the Lord.” In other words, one must make every effort to pursue peace in others and to be holy; no one will meet the Lord without holiness. Being able to understand holiness in others means being able to perceive the goodness in everyone, regardless of their history, ethnicity, or sins they may have committed. In chapter three of the second part, the Priest is thrown into a cell, "very similar to the world: overcrowded with lust, crimes and unhappy love". (Page 123) Paradoxically, in this squalid room, the Priest manages to accept peace because he knows he has hit rock bottom. He believes in God's forgiveness, which allows him to feel compassion for those who are less righteous. He gains a new perspective on life and is able to judge people from a humanitarian point of view, rather than a priestly one.
