How would you feel if someone played your race but instead of being the same race as you they had to wear makeup to look like you? In American cinema, there have been many occasions where actors were cast in roles in which they played a different racial or ethnic group. Usually it was white actors changing races, but more recently it was minorities playing different minorities. This has caused an increase in public concern about cross-racial/ethnic casting, leaving people involved in American cinema wondering whether or not actors should be allowed to have a role as a person of another race/ethnic group. Actors who are cast as a different race are not at fault. For the most part the roles themselves are racist. It makes no difference whether the role was played by the same race or not. These roles are extremely stereotypical and racist. Another reason for playing a different race is that the actor can only play the role he or she is assigned. If the actor doesn't like the role, he doesn't get paid, which most actors can't afford. Defending an injustice would get the actor fired and someone who was okay with the role taking his place. Furthermore, the only way to remain prejudicial is to use colorblind blending. Regardless of race, the best actor gets the job. While this is something that is not acceptable on any level, the issue is not the fact that the actors are playing these roles. The public outcry about actors playing other races has drawn attention to the topic and produced numerous arguments. These actors portraying themselves as a different race is something that should not be seen as a positive thing that we should continue to do. First, having an actor play another race usually results in a more stereotypical role. This gives the public a bad image of different ethnicities, who may think that this is the normal behavior of ethnicities. Likewise, having an actor play another ethnicity takes a job away from someone of that race. Actors of other races are underrepresented in films. By not giving opportunities to minorities, they cannot prove that they are actually good actors, limiting them in future roles. By allowing actors to represent a different race we are not respecting minorities as equals.
