Stereotype threat is present in our daily lives and prevents people from doing things to the best of their ability. It is the fear of confirming a negative stereotype about yourself resulting in a weaker performance. One example where stereotype threat exists is when African Americans perform poorly on tests compared to Caucasian individuals. This occurs because the stereotype is that African Americans are intellectually inferior to Caucasians. In a context where the negative stereotype is remembered, African Americans will perform poorly on tests when in reality they are capable of performing as well if not better than Caucasian individuals. (Article 1) Stereotype threat limits individuals' performance in academia, sports, or even something like driving. By reducing stereotype threat, performance in many areas can improve and people can perform tasks to their full potential. Stereotype threat leads to poor performance in academic and work situations. People may feel that they cannot overcome the stereotype and become limited in their successes. (article 1 I believe) The purpose of this article is to inform about stereotype threat and how to reduce it, as well as to present my investigation aimed at reducing stereotype threat. Numerous research and investigations have been conducted on the topic of stereotype threat. In the articles linked to this article, experiments were conducted to see how stereotype threat affected test results. During the tests, some participants were exposed to variables that activated a negative stereotype while others were not. Those exposed to the negative stereotype had poorer outcomes. Therefore stereotype threat resulted in weaker performance. It is proven that the threat exists, but therefore... halfway through the document... ours were made. Research has discovered ways to reduce stereotype threat, and I myself have thought about a study that could be done to reduce stereotype threat. Through several articles I was introduced to the concept of stereotype threat and how it represents a problem in our society. When we are part of a negative stereotype, this can limit us from performing a task to our full potential. Stereotype threat can cause higher levels of anxiety, lower expectations of oneself, lack of motivation, and can divert our attention from important things. Due to the threat of stereotypes, we are faced with inadequate and inaccurate results in performing tasks. If my study were to be conducted, I believe it would help recognize another threat that exists and find ways to reduce it. As attention to stereotype threat grows, research and studies should continue and focus on reducing stereotype threat in our society.
