Armstrong, Elizabeth. “Identity and competence: The use of culture in the interpretation of sexual images.” Sociological Perspectives 49.3 (2003): 411-432. Premier of academic research. Network. November 14, 2013. The main thesis of this empirical and theoretical essay concerns the way in which the categorization of something between the concepts of art and pornography depends on moral and aesthetic criteria. The essay was created on the basis of a study applied to three hundred university students. An image of a couple masturbating was presented and several human concepts and classifications were created based on the students' responses. The relationship between art and pornography or vice versa was tested in the student sample. Their responses and interpretations distinguished something as porn, art, or both at the same time. Those concepts that have been very debatable regarding their differences and similarities are now being questioned in a different way. The idea of individuals providing their own perspective on a masturbating image has led to a humane classification of: No Artistic Conservative, No Artistic Liberal, Artistic Liberal, and Artistic Conservative. Basically, the answer to whether something is porn or art comes from the background and personality of the individual experiencing a certain situation in which sexual content is presented.
