Flipkart - A Giant in the MakingFlipkart was born in 2007 with the aim of making books easily available to anyone with access to the internet. Today they are present in various categories including movies, music, games, mobile phones, cameras, computers, healthcare and personal products, appliances and electronics, stationery, perfumes, toys, clothing, shoes - and counting!. Wow, that sounds like an impressive list, but getting here wasn't easy. It is a fact that Flipkart and its investors appear to be losing money at this stage. They recalled large electronic items as the customer experience was not up to par. Their logic was simple: If they can't provide a pleasant customer experience, they won't. Additionally, their online music store Flyte Music shut down just over a year after its launch. In the words of Sachin Bansal, CEO of Flipkart, Flyte does not offer massive business potential. Statistics showed that Flipkart's music CD section attracted only 1/6 of the traffic, but its revenue was 3 times that of digital downloads (pay per download). Produces a distorted ratio of 18:1 in favor of music CDs. Digital music doesn't exist in India right now, it's a niche business. Flipkart realized that the customer is against this model and abandoned Flyte. Flipkart has always had this experimental temperament about its business and will continue to improvise as a startup is not built to be small, it has to grow big. However, long term will be a different story as e-commerce in India has just reached less than 1/10th of its potential. Out of India's 120 million population, no more than 1.5 million frequently use e-commerce. Considering the growing internet users, the market is expected to reach at least 15... half of paper... till early days for Flipkart. To reach the levels of Amazon and eBay there is still a lot to do. So far all is well, but there is still a mountain to climb for the giant in the making. “Nothing is predestined. Obstacles from your past can become doors that lead to new beginnings. ― Ralph H.
