Topic > Problems in teaching writing - 1364

Writing reveals itself every day as a tool to be used in one's own way to express oneself. Many teachers have their own approaches to teaching writing and not to say that they are not effective, I just feel that if some people change their approach, some of the problems that I see myself could be modified by a change in approach to teaching and writing evaluation. Some problems I see are that students are not exposed to different writing styles, their writing assignments test their knowledge and memory instead of their critical and analytical thinking skills, and the way teachers evaluate writing. These problems are nice, I love writing and have had good and bad experiences with writing teachers. I believe that a problem in teaching writing is the student's exposure to different writing styles. Genre writing styles, but for the sake of this discussion I want to focus on high school level essays. When I was in high school writing an essay was a pain because it was always a “reflection” or a “persuasive” essay. No real analytical or evaluation skills were ever needed. It wasn't until I took the AP English course that I was exposed to writing at a more advanced level. I think that teaching writing in high schools should be more exploratory because students have already acquired the fundamentals of the language in “grammar” school. At the high school level it should be the teacher's job to teach students to use writing in many different ways and to use it as a tool. One of the questions my group asked our instructor “Is it more effective to assign students personal essays” where they share their experiences or critical documents they must respond to as academics? His response was great… middle of paper… a traditional option next to a creative option. Therefore students can choose which one they will perform best in. My approach to writing will always be to present information so they can see it as something they can use to improve their writing and not things they need to know. I want my students to be able to use written language to their advantage and be very flexible in the way they write. Therefore in my classroom there will always be the implementation of the necessary standards and knowledge with creative freedom. Students must experience and demonstrate knowledge of comfortable and uncomfortable writing and be able to identify writing styles. I want to teach my students every possible essay style and every other writing style so that they have a complete understanding of how to write and how to use writing as a means to an end.
