In his story he talks about the pressure of seeing Jesus. Hughes felt like he was under pressure because he was the only one who wasn't saved because he didn't see Jesus with his eyes; instead he lied and said he had done it so as not to be excluded. This is because he was the only one the entire church was now waiting for to “see Jesus and be saved.” This is demonstrated when Hughes says, “I began to feel ashamed of myself, holding it all in for so long” (p. 184). Due to his incompetence in failing to see Jesus, he later states that he would have simply stood up, but doing so made him regret doing so. This is where he says, “I had deceived everyone in the church” (p. 184). This is Hughes' way of showing that pressure is something of great importance because he did something he knew was wrong and he did it to please others rather than stick to something.
