ERS First Draft Many social problems should be nipped in the bud to prevent long-term disasters. Abortion is no exception to this rule. Abortion is considered legal in some countries. Although it is illegal in Thailand, the law cannot prevent people from undertaking the procedure secretly. There are many reasons that abortion is legal in Thailand. A legal limit on abortion should be allowed to give people the chance for better individual and social well-being. First of all, people will continue to undergo abortion even if it is illegal, but a legal limit on abortion can ensure the safety of pregnant mothers. There are many underground places that perform the termination procedure. “Women will end up opting for unsafe abortions if the healthcare system does not provide abortion services,” said Sutham Pinjaroen of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Prince of Songkla University (Pinjaroen, 2013). Abortion is a delicate process and requires proper tools and a certified doctor to conduct. There is no guarantee that the underground location can safely abort. Furthermore, women are much safer with the abortion limit. The risk of maternal death doubles after the second abortion and triples after the third (Eilliot, 2012). Therefore, a legal limit on abortion can ensure the safety of pregnant women. Secondly, women should have the right to make their own decisions. “A woman who needs an abortion is at a crossroads,” said Dr. Linda Prine, medical director of the Reproductive Health Access Project (Prine, 2013). Although getting pregnant is the happiest moment for some people, for the unexpected ones it is a nightmare in real life.
