As Harrison Enudi once said, “God is the maker and bringer of your destiny.” No one can do anything that can change the situation; once God decides what fate and destiny one will face, that would become the story of his life. The idea that one's destiny was predetermined by God was a widely accepted belief during the Elizabethan era (A pair of star-crossed lovers take their own lives). In the book Romeo and Juliet, Romeo plays a tragic hero who is not guilty of his tragic end, but is instead a victim of luck and coincidence. His tragic flaw, his immaturity and his cruel luck, led him to be a victim of suicide for a reason that doesn't exist. No matter how superficial, careless, and capricious Romeo is, he simply is what he is: a normal teenage boy. No one is perfect and should not be blamed for Juliet's death just because of her tragic flaws. Romeo's superficiality in choosing who he is attracted to by their appearances is what made him fall in love too hastily and easily in the first place. From the beginning, Rosaline's appearance enchanted Romeo into believing he was in love with her. He stated, “she is too just, too wise, wisely too just, to deserve happiness by making me despair” (Shakespeare, 1.1.24-25). Romeo never expressed his love for Rosaline except through her beauty. Furthermore, even when he tries to forget her, Romeo searches for a beauty who can surpass Rosaline. Romeo said, “show me a mistress who passes well; what use is its beauty but as a note where I may read who has passed that passing fair” (Shakespear 1.1.24-25)? Judge a person solely by their coverage, not by their personality or intelligence. He's young, wild and, like any normal teenager, his love is tied to... medium of paper... destiny. As Romeo once said, “I defy thee, star” (Shakespeare, 5.1.212-213)! Romeo interprets the stars as a symbol of his destiny and his tragic end. By defying the stars, he is saying that he is rebelling against his own faith and against the sky. As said in Romeo and Juliet, "simply fate took this young couple and played a cruel game against them with loaded dice, without the aid of any evil in men" (Bloom, 153). Some people might see Romeo as the greatest and bravest man on the face of the earth who was willing to take his own life to be with the love of his life. However, the truth is that he is just a boy who fell in love too quickly, an immature boy who could not bear the fact of having to live without Juliet and a boy who played a role in a twist of tragic fate. He is nothing but an ordinary teenager who unfortunately became a victim of coincidence.
