Topic > Analysis of Urie Bronfenbrenner's ecological model - 720

In Lumberton I work with the guidance counselor. As guidance counselors, we talk to children and see how they are doing. When applying the ecological model to working with children, we look first at the microsystem. The microsystem of one of the kids we talk to is made up of his grandmother, his school and his parents. He currently lives with his grandmother because his mother is constantly at work and his father is in prison. Her grandmother takes care of her and her brother during the week and they go home to their mothers on the weekend. The mother is known to be involved in drug trafficking and they have solar panels at home, which means the electricity goes out often. The grandmother took them in because the mother's boyfriend is bad and the children don't have much food at their mother's house. This little girl's mesosystem is her relationship with her mother and grandmother. She doesn't like going back to her mother's house because of her mother's boyfriend. The grandmother has an excellent relationship with the little girl. Even though the little girl has a bad home life, she was the student of the month. She is an excellent student and continues to get good grades. He is using his school as a coping mechanism rather than acting out. This girl's exosystem is her mother's job and could be the Department of Human Services. Her mother's job keeps her away most of the time
