Many accidents happen in homes around the world. One of the most preventable ones are fires that occur in the kitchen during cooking. Kitchen safety is preventable because we know many ways to avoid these fires. There are many reasons to learn about kitchen safety. Part of these reasons is that with knowledge and prevention measures it is possible to reduce the extent of property damage, loss of life and insurance costs. “In 2009, 2,565 people died in house fires. Almost all of these deaths could have been prevented by taking a few simple precautions, such as having working smoke detectors and a home fire prevention plan, keeping burning things away from the stove, and always turning heaters off before going to bed,' says Jason Cullen of Eliot Fire Department. (Fire Brigade Eliot). Countless meals are cooked every day in this country without incident; however, today we will focus on meals that end in a house fire. Already as children in elementary school, in science or by a firefighter during fire prevention week, they were taught the fire triangle. To have fire three components must be present; oxygen, heat and a fuel. Oxygen is in our atmosphere and is always present. During cooking the stove is the heat source and the cooking oils used and the fats in the meat are the fuels. The triangle must be broken to put out a fire. Remove one of the components and the fire will go out. The five different classes of fires are A, B, C, D and K. Class A includes ordinary fuels, which include waste, paper, wood. Class A fires can be extinguished with water. The water cools the fuel and reduces the heat, so break the triangle. Water is readily available and cheap and is a very common outlet... middle of paper...gigiant and staying in the kitchen while cooking is the number one safety tip. Turn off the stove and move the pot before leaving the kitchen to do something else. Having working smoke detectors in your home is vital. Keep fire extinguishers in your home and check them regularly. The stove hood fire extinguisher is a good backup in case things go wrong. All of these steps can help you protect the most valuable items in your home. These items belong to your family members. Works Cited "Essentials of Firefighting 4th Edition".
