Nike has not created and implemented an effective approach to social responsibility. When Nike released a report on corporate responsibility in 2005, it realized that its business processes and manufacturing pressures often clashed with code policies and led to violations and employees and managers taking shortcuts. Nike also designed an autonomous monitoring program to rate factories on a letter scale based on requirements in areas such as working hours, wages, complaint systems, chemical management, fire safety and protective equipment. However, the findings failed to address any of the significant problems. Reports from a factory in Bangladesh say management punished employees for learning about workers' rights, and reports from a factory in Malaysia found workers paid an outrageous hiring fee and were denied passports until they were paid.
