One of the tasks performed by the data scientist at eBay involves “A/B testing” the site (Saran, April 29, 2014). With A/B testing, eBay continually makes changes to homepages, be it font, colors, images, offers, moving packages, in order to get more clicks, longer visits, more purchases. Without being told, a fraction of users are directed to a slightly different version of a particular web page and their behavior is compared to the mass of users of the standard site (Christian, April 25, 2012). If the new version is successful, it will either replace the original or be phased out without most users seeing it. Another benefit provided by the use of big data and analytics technology is that, by using advanced search suggestions, eBay is able to present suggestions for search queries based on topics that power users have already asked about. These searches allow eBay sellers to see whether it's best to set a low auction reserve price, whether free shipping is important, and other questions related to selling on eBay (Saran, April 29,
