Since the French Revolution took place during the Romantic Period, many writers displayed nonconformity in their writings. They would write about how things should be different and how they should change. A good example of this would be “The Chimney Sweeper” from Songs of Experience by William Blake. In it he writes: “Where are your father and mother? you say?/ They both went up to the church to pray." Parents would make their children work to earn money for them. Many children were sent by their parents to work as chimney sweeps, even though it was a very dangerous job. Blake writes this poem so people can see what they are putting children through. Wordsworth also quotes: “It does not move us. Great God! I would rather be/ A heathen nursed in a worn creed;/ So might I, standing in this pleasant meadow,” (lines 9-10) He says he would rather be heathen than conform to different ways. Here it refers to people who distance themselves from nature. He believes it is a horrible mistake and refuses to conform to them
